Following the cancellation of last year’s event, we are pleased to see that the Cadet Winton team competition will be running again in 2021. The format has changed to one weapon per day to avoid overnight stays as part of the COVID mitigation measures. For this year only, there is also the opportunity for U18’s (born 2003) to take part as they will have missed out last year.

- Saturday 18th December – Foil

- Sunday 19th December – Epee

- Monday 20th December – Sabre

Millfield School, Street, Somerset

The approach Welsh Fencing will take this year is similar to previous years. All places are discretionary, and we hope to be able to send full teams of 4 for all weapons with non-travelling reserves. Where we can’t field full teams, sadly we will not be able to enter that particular weapon.

Our intent is to select the teams based on two areas of focus, namely leadership and competitive experience . Places will be allocated to fencers to start developing leadership roles and experience in a team environment. The remaining places will be offered to fencers who will benefit from the experience of fencing at this level as part of team Wales. Where we can, we will name reserves for each of these areas of focus indicated by the colours in the table below.

Selection for the event is as follows:

Welsh Fencing will cover the cost of team fee, and subsidise the fencer’s fee. A contribution of £25.00 will be requested for each fencer accepting their place. We will also be sending a team coach for each day, along with an additional member of staff to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our fencers.

We will be using the TEAMO app to communicate with the selected fencers and process payment securely. If you are selected, please ensure you have downloaded the app and registered accordingly.

Welsh Fencing will not be organising or providing transport for fencers to or from the venue. The start time has not been published yet, but we expect fencers to arrive an hour before to warm up and plan for the day.

COVID protocols

Parents & spectators will be welcome at the venue and there will be Covid protocols in place. These include ‘field of play’ and spectators zones which be strictly adhered to. Face masks are to be worn by everyone when not in the field of play.

It is great to see the return of this event into the fencing calendar and we wish our fencers good luck!
