The following table outlines the summary details of selection for the Wales team for the various Cadet, Junior and Senior events for which a national team is selected.

Team of up to 4 fencers per weapon, across all 6 weapons, at each age group

Selection via ranking on Welsh Youth League, for fencers attending a minimum of 5 events outside of the Welsh regional events and who are competing as a cadet in the BRC events (U15 only).

Youth 5 Nations

Date: 27 June 2020

Selection: 31 March 2020

Age must be under 18 and over 13 at the start of the calendar year.

Selection for the Y5N will be made from the top 4 in the U20 / U17 rankings as they stand on the selection date.

Junior GB rankings will be looked at first, followed by cadet and then U15 should we need to.  We will then review placings on the Welsh Youth League.

In addition:

To have demonstrated commitment to Welsh Fencing by having entered / competed at at least one of the following events prior to selection:

Welsh Youth Event; Welsh Open; Welsh Nationals.

Or to have demonstrated a commitment to Welsh Fencing through, for example, acting as a referee at Welsh Fencing events where a fencer may be out of training due to exam commitments.

We will select 4 fencers per weapon, plus a non travelling reserve to make up the team.

Senior Winton

Event: July, 2020

Selection: 30 April, 2020

Venue: Nottingham

Senior 5 Nations

Automatic selection for those achieving a top 50 placing in the Senior Rankings on selection date, up to the maximum team size of 4

Cadet Winton

·        To have demonstrated commitment to Welsh Fencing by competing in one of the following events prior to selection: Welsh Youth Event; Welsh Open; Welsh Nationals to.

·        Or to have demonstrated a commitment to Welsh Fencing through, for example, acting as a referee at Welsh Fencing events where a fencer may be out of training due to exam commitments.

Then selection is as per the event criteria.

Senior Commonwealth Championships

Selection: T-6 months; fencers to be notified by tbc; appeals to be received by tbc; final selection by tbc

Automatic selection for those achieving a Top 30 placing in the ranking lists on selection date, providing they are in the Top 25% of the ranking list (excluding those with no points) up to the maximum team size.

The Board can apply discretionary selection up to the maximum team size where there are insufficient automatic selections.

Please note selections will be based on the latest available UK rankings at the selection date and therefore results from the British Championships and other events that fall before 16th April but have not yet been included in the UK rankings will NOT count towards rankings for selection purposes.

Team Selection is based on results at the event.

The only grounds for appeal will be either a material inaccuracy in the rankings used for selection or the incorrect application of the stated selection policy. Fencers are responsible for reporting ranking inaccuracies to the specified weapon ranking co-ordinator.  Any such appeal should be made in writing to the Chairperson of Welsh Fencing within two weeks of the publication of the relevant ranking on the British Fencing website.  Appeals will be decided by the Board, whose decision shall be final.

Cadet and Junior Commonwealth Championships

Automatic selection for those achieving a Top 30 placing in the ranking lists on selection date, providing they are in the Top 40% of the ranking list (excluding those with no points) up to the maximum team size.

And / or been selected to represent GBR in the season

The Board can apply discretionary selection up to the maximum team size where there are insufficient automatic selections.

Team Selection is based on results at the event.

The only grounds for appeal will be either a material inaccuracy in the rankings used for selection or the incorrect application of the stated selection policy. Fencers are responsible for reporting ranking inaccuracies to the specified weapon ranking co-ordinator. Appeals will be decided by the Board, whose decision shall be final.

 

Please note that the Board reserves the right to decide not to select/send a team for any event, regardless of fencers meeting the selection criteria.  Selection of all teams is the responsibility of the Board; they may, however, request input from weapon-specific coaches.
